Creating Synergy in ESG Risk Management

What aspects of ESG issues do you find most compelling, and how does this influence your approach to understanding and addressing these challenges?

Bronwyn: I am fascinated by the interconnection of environmental, social, and governance issues. Our world is much more complex, and we gain so much more joy than is captured in the concepts of economics and financial statements. I enjoy systems thinking and bringing all the pieces of our world together into huge interlinking maps of stakeholders, drivers, and barriers. Then, hopefully, we can manage the risks in a more holistic manner, avoid unintended consequences, and improve both businesses and society.

What has been the focus of your work in global risk organizations, and how has this experience influenced your research and contributions to the field of ESG?

Martin: Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to have worked for global risk organisations, both as a consultant and as a practitioner, that have focused on helping society manage complex and emerging risks using advanced risk management tools and techniques. This led me to research specific areas of ESG, including recently publishing a book entitled “Climate Change Enterprise Risk Management – A Practical Guide to Reaching Net Zero Goals” an area that I consider to be the most exciting area in the field. I enjoy supporting organisations in their strategic plans to become more sustainable as well as to build greater resilience to climate change risks.

What inspired you to create this course on climate risk and ESG risk management?

Bronwyn: When conceiving this course, I was struck by the number of risk professionalsbwho were struggling to bring the risks of climate change into the enterprise risk framework. I want to share my skills to enable risk managers to tackle climate risks and to set up a more advanced approach to ESG risk management that would be fit for purpose in the future as ESG risks evolve and emerge.
